Teaching Philosophy |
Music education in school is important for children because music functions as a creative outlet. After being in general studies all day, walking into a music class room is refreshing. In a music classroom students don't sit and listen to a lecture, they work together as a team to create and express musical ideas in the form of songs. To be part of a musical ensemble instead of just listening to one is a highly rewarding feeling. Music can enhance other aspects of education. A student could be interested in the background of a song and by their own curiosity they learn about historical periods. Through music they can get an idea of how life was in that time period. In the music classroom a student finds a diverse group of people with which they can make friends outside of their normal comfort zone.
Every kind of person could be taught music education. A child who is struggling to find their place among their peers could quickly become part of a musical ensemble and learn how to work with others. The troubled child who tends to act out can come to a music classroom and learn they have something to strive for with no one to hold them back. Historically, music has been used as a method for people to express their connection to themselves and their surroundings. Music has been shown to be therapeutic in coping with daily stresses. Music knows no discrimination. Through musical tones, one can find oneself connected to a universal idea of beauty and expression. My music education classroom will incorporate a structure that emphasizes clear expectations, progressions, and enjoyment of the students. There are several ways one can teach music. Occasionally, there will be special activities to help set in a specific skill or emotion needed to perform a piece of music. My classroom will be fun but also engaging. I will post posters and bulletin boards with musical vocabulary which will give the students visual reinforcement. My students will know I am available to them if they need help or advice on things outside of the classroom. I will find ways to show the students how non-classical music is just as educational as the music they will learn. My students will be excited and motivated to come to class, to see their friends, and work together on music so they may proudly present their efforts to their friends and families. |
